FAO/GGGI Workshop on the Best Practices to Prevent and Reduce Abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG)


Between the 14th and 17th October 2019, Kat Collinson, Key Traceability’s Fisheries Consultant attended the FAO/GGGI Workshop on the best practices to prevent and reduce abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) in Dakar, Senegal. Participants came from all over west Africa, South Africa and Kenya to discuss the issue of lost fishing gear and its impacts.


The workshop was run to identify the problem of lost fishing gear in the region and introducing international policy framework and FAO Voluntary Guidelines for the Marking of Fishing Gear and options for preventing and reducing marine litter from fishing operations. The workshop also included presentations on initiatives in the region, including the ISSF deployment of biodegradable Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in Ghana.


Information collected from this workshop will be used to encourage best practice in the Ghana EASTI purse seine and Ghana pole and line fishery improvement projects (FIPs).
